Sunday 27 Feb 11 – Volunteer Point

Volunteer Point is a peninsula to the north of East Falkland. It was named after the ship Volunteer which called at the Islands in 1815.
Volunteer Beach is a 2 mile long white sandy beach. There are Gentoo, Magellenic and King Penguins breeding here. The King Penguin colony is the largest in the Falkland Islands. Back in 1870 the King Penguin had almost been exterminated, killed for their oil and feathers. 
Today there are more than a thousand breeding adults at the colony and over 500 chicks are raised each year.
